Schomburg Gallery is pleased to present, "Scape Routes" featuring paintings by Elena Allen.

The vibrant colors and sharply superimposed planes of Elena Allen's sixteen oils in her new show are indebted in part to the LA Latino painters and to Matisse, Diebenkorn and Thiebaud. But they unquestionably spring from her own long encounter as an established Santa Monica artist with the Southland's light and with the city-ocean-mountain-desert complex it illuminates. This arresting set of paintings consists of festive mood pieces, rich with manipulated natural images, striking contours and at times hard edges: it gives us some alluring escape routes out into the land-, sky-, and flower-scapes of reflection.
