FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 28, 2003 Ann Bridges "Across the Channel" April 12, 2003 - May 12, 2003 Artist Reception: Saturday, April 12, 5 - 8 PM Santa Monica, Calif. -- Schomburg Gallery is pleased to announce "Across the Channel" an exhibition of paintings by Southern California artist Ann Bridges. Ann Bridges has painted a soulful series of works that reflect the natural beauty of Santa Catalina Island entitled Across the Channel. The artist traveled to the remote hills of the Isthmus of Catalina in the winter months this year to capture the pristine beauty of this unspoiled island. The vistas are only across the channel from the metropolis of Los Angeles but seem to exist in another time; open grassy hillsides and cactus and palms against the clear sky and bluffs that drop to the sea. Nowhere is there evidence of modern civilization or development. Ann Bridges uses rich colors and bold brush strokes of oil paint to capture what she observes. She uses expressionistic color and simplified compositions but maintains the recognition of her locales. Sometimes she includes an indication of humanity in a road or a lone boat in the distance. All these add up to a sense of solitude and peace. Bridges states that, "the beauty of nature is very much intact in this place. In these tumultuous times it is reassuring and heartening to know that this is a constant." Ann Bridges holds an MFA from California State University, Long Beach. She is active in the Southern California arts community and serves on the faculty of the Orange County High School for the Arts. Ann Bridges' paintings are included in numerous private, public and corporate collections.
