Yu Ji
"American Cityscapes"

Schomburg Gallery is pleased to present "American Cityscapes" a solo exhibition of paintings by Yu Ji.

Yu Ji's paintings explore the enigmatic, often tenuous relationships between people. Figures share the cramped spaces of urban landscape, tight rooms, the sweltering closeness of city life; figures recline inside a seemingly self-imposed dystopia. A divine sense of isolation informs Ji's paintings which are eloquent figurative compositions in oil painted in rich, muted colors.

Ji's paintings exist as memorials to solitude, to human struggle, to the American notion of "the dream," a living imagination. Masterfully executed, these paintings depict intensely private moments, people sitting alone, rapt in private concentration, though lying side by side in a room, or sitting atop the hoods of cars, playing guitar in quiet desperation.

Ji was raised in Beijing and moved to New York in 1983 to study art at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in New York City where the dazzling richness of the architecture and textures of human life immediately captivated him. Ji received his MFA from the State University of New York. He is assistant professor in the art department at Cal State Long Beach.
