"America the Beautiful"

Sarah Arnold, Barrie Mottishaw, Andrew Dickson, Michael Askew, Susanna Dadd

November 3 - November 30, 2001

Opening Reception: November 3, 2001 4 - 7 PM

Schomburg Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by five artists: Sarah Arnold, Barrie Mottishaw, Andrew Dickson, Michael Askew and Susanna Dadd.

This exhibition brings together five landscape artists whose works remind us what a beautiful place we inhabit. The exhibit charts a stunning visual passage from the wide expansiveness of the Canyon de Chelly to the California landscape. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to Silver Shield Foundation which provides scholarships for children of fallen NYC firefighters and policemen.

Sarah Arnold's paintings of cityscapes and towns are lush and evocative, and stem from a rich tradition of landscape painting. Her work takes as it subjects older buildings "slated to be demolished" and neighborhoods that have fallen into disrepair. She charts the passing of time and light across the crumbling facades of building, restoring to her subjects a dignity and serene pathos. Barrie Mottishaw's work captures the vastness and awesome beauty of the hills in and around Los Angeles. Small houses pock the red mountains, seemingly lost in variegated shades of the landscape. Andrew Dickson's paintings of seascapes are intense explorations of the natural world. Dickson, working directly from life, captures the exactitudes and subtle gradations of water into land. Michael Askew's photographs attest to the grandeur and power of nature. His photos serve to commemorate the beauty and fragility of the living world in the face of technology. Susanna Dadd's work depicts landscape in transition. She has painted onto a single wood panel a trio of mountain ranges, at once elegant and serene.

Sarah Arnold has exhibited her work at Ruth Bachofner Gallery, The Long Beach Museum of Art and LACMA. Barrie Mottishaw, a graduate from The Claremont Graduate School, has had solo exhibitions at Koplin Gallery and The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Andrew Dickson is currently a graduate student in fine art at California State University, Long Beach. Michael Askew has exhibited his work at the National Cathedral Gallery in Washington, D.C. His award winning work has been included in a variety of exhibits, and is included in several private collections. Susanna Dadd has had solo exhibitions at Daniel Saxon Gallery and Michael Kohn Gallery.
