"Contemporary Color Symbolism"

Rae Mahaffey, Janet Horton, Samantha Fields

October 10 - November 1, 2001

Opening Reception: October 20, 2001 5 - 7 PM

Schomburg Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by three women artists, Rae Mahaffey, Janet Horton and Samantha Fields.

The works in this exhibition are inspired by ideas of manipulation, contrived space delineated in imagination, the imagery sprung from an illusive concept of individual order. A tangential relationship to nature is implied, though each of these artists' "reimagines" the static images that comprise the natural world, transforming them into new forms conjoined and assembled through color and shape.

Rae Mahaffey's oils are dense configurations of pattern and color that "veil" content, intentionally obscuring information through a process of continuous layering, creating geometric landscapes intended to symbolize the predetermined systems around which we construct our lives. Janet Horton's photographs of a girl spinning a hula hoop around her waist capture moments of time simultaneously activated and frozen, whereby the hula hoop becomes another controlled element in a manipulated landscape. Samantha Fields paints lush evocations of the natural world gone mad manipulated, synthesized, constructed and "engineered," the images investigating the process by which nature in today's modern age is chillingly recreated through science and genetic manipulation.

Rae Mahaffey has exhibited her work at The Laura Russo Gallery in Portland, Oregon and her work has been included in many shows including the Oregon Biennial. Janet Horton received her MFA in art from Claremont. She has shown at The Patricia Correia Gallery and The San Marcos Fine Arts Center. Samantha Fields received her MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has exhibited at the Jones Center for Contemporary Art in Austin, Texas and POST Gallery.
