Augustus Francis and Margaret Francis

July 9, 2003 - August 16, 2003

Artist Reception: Wednesday, July 9, 6 - 9 PM

Santa Monica, Calif. - May 7, 2003 -- The Schomburg Gallery is pleased to announce “Francis & Francis,” an exhibition of paintings by British artists Margaret Francis and Augustus Francis. Margaret Francis is the widow of famed Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis, and Augustus Francis is the only child from their marriage.

Margaret Francis’ landscape paintings of the English countryside reveal a serene elegance. Margaret grew up on a farm where her love of nature and ruminations on landscape were first nurtured. Her landscapes seem to continue on forever, a sort of transcendental echo that fuses the beauty of the natural world with light and color. These paintings stand as a testament to the tranquility of the spirit. Sam Francis connected his wife’s art to master British painter J.M.W. Turner, another artist dedicated to capturing the forces of nature. “Nobody has taken on the mantle of Turner, that’s your job,” declared Sam Francis.

Margaret Francis received her Degree in Fine Art from Winchester Art School in England and her Higher Degree in Fine Art from the Chelsea School of Art in London. Her paintings have been in many prominent exhibitions including the Young Contemporary Show at the Royal Academy of Art in London and at The Oxford Museum. Her work has also been shown extensively in Japan. In New York, she has shown at the Bernard Jacobson Gallery.

The work of Augustus Francis is remarkable for its sophistication and subtle comprehension of color and composition. Francis’ paintings attest to the power and grace of a truly astonishing talent. His paintings combine the fluidity of line and extraordinary visual strength of his father’s best work with the quiet resplendence of his personal, unique, and multi-dimensional sensibility. His inspiration often comes from dreams. Although some collectors have been unable to distinguish Augustus’ works from those of his father’s, others have noted that Augustus has in many ways surpassed his father’s work, bringing a dimensionality and form not seen before.

Augustus Francis is currently a student at Stoneyhurst College in England. Since his debut exhibition last summer at the Schomburg Gallery, his paintings have also exhibited in England.
