Jürgen Kuschnik

"Headless"

August 3 - August 30, 2002

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 3, 5 - 7 PM

Schomburg Gallery is pleased to present Headless, an exhibition of photographs by Jürgen Kuschnik.

Jürgen Kuschnik's photographs of headless figures in a variety of landscapes are both haunting and elusive. The images call into question ideas of identity and autonomy, as well as other compelling compositional concerns‹how the figure exists in space and time.

The subjects all appear with their heads just outside the frame and seem fixed in particular moments, held in a kind of timelessness wherein the world breaks open around them. From a man basking in a swimming pool to a young bride holding flowers, each image creates a mesmerizing impressionistic vision of body language.

Kuschnik's SX 70 Polaroid images are created through a photo manipulation process whereby the Polaroids's emulsion is distorted through the use of a small hand-held, spoon-shaped tool. The result is a wavy, abstracted image that presents a painterly quality. Kuschnik then re-photographs the Polaroid image onto 4 x 5 film and produces an archival print on Ilfochrome paper.

Kuschnik's works are among the permanent collections of the University of Texas Museum of Fine Art, Austin, Texas, the Carnegie Museum, Oxnard, California, and the Ventura County Museum of History and Art. Kuschnik is widely recognized for his work in both black and white photography as well as for his prolific Polaroid manipulation series. His work has been featured on Hallo, Niedersachsen, a popular German television program, and several pieces from Kuschnik's Headless Series were showcased in the recently released Kenneth Branagh and Robin Wright-Penn motion picture, How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog.
