"JazzWorks"

Norton Wright

April 10, 2004 - May 12, 2004

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 10, 5 - 8 PM

Santa Monica, Calif. -- February 6, 2004 -- Starting on April 10th, Santa Monica's Schomburg Gallery, in association with KJAZZ Radio, celebrates April 2004 as "National Jazz Appreciation Month" with an exhibition of abstract expressionist paintings saluting and visualizing the music of a treasury of renowned jazz musicians many of whom live in the Los Angeles area. Terry Gibbs, Kenny Burrell, Tierney Sutton, Alan Broadbent, Diane Schuur, and Terry Trotter are among them, and the legendary jazz of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Marian McPartland have also inspired the exhibition's powerful visual expressions.

Entitled "JazzWorks", the exhibition presents works of artist, Norton Wright. Each painting takes the form of a jazz improvisation, bursts of accents and symbols which, like jazz licks, organically build and swing into a complete whole. Mr. Wright comments, "I like to think that each painting, perceived as a whole or in its myriad details, can be heard as well as seen."

An art major at Yale University, Mr. Wright studied with renowned, Bauhaus artist, Josef Albers, and attributes his regard for color to that master painter. Continuing his studies with contemporary painter, Bonita Helmer, at Los Angeles' Otis College Of Art, Mr. Wright's paintings have been shown at the Don O'Melveny Gallery in Los Angeles and New York City's Ward-Nasse Gallery.

Mr. Wright pursues a dual career in fine art and in the entertainment industry. In the television world, Mr. Wright produced the "Sesame Street" series for six years in NYC before moving to Los Angeles as producer of the Emmy Award-winning TV series, "Freestyle", and television movies starring Robert Urich, Anne Archer, Charlton Heston, Susan Lucci, Richard Thomas, Debbie Reynolds, and Ed Asner.

KJAZZ, Listener-Supported Radio, 88.1FM, the preeminent station for jazz in Southern California, is sponsoring the Schomburg Gallery's "JazzWorks" exhibition as a public service to promote the significance of jazz as a unique part of American culture.

The U.S. Congress has passed a resolution designating jazz as "a rare and valuable national treasure." The Smithsonian Institution supported in part by a special congressional appropriation, has designated April as "Jazz Appreciation Month" and describes jazz "as the most significant musical culture to emerge in the United States".
