"Legal Fiction"

Domenic Cretara

April 12, 2002 - May 8, 2002

Opening Reception - Saturday, April 13, 4-7 PM

Schomburg Gallery is pleased to announce "Legal Fiction," an exhibition of works by Domenic Cretara.

The works that comprise Domenic Cretara's "Legal Fiction" constitute a wrenching, stunningly evocative and eerie journey into the psychology of evil, into the machinations, and legal manipulations that surrounded the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

Cretara has captured in the tight, quietly controlled gestures of paint, the awesome brutality that remains to this day inexplicable and impossibly charged. These paintings are poetic and desperately haunting; Cretara has informed the bodies of the dead with tremendous dignity, and has restored to the unfortunate victims in this tragedy, a nuanced grace, a silence wherein, strangely, his figures are empowered and given voice through the simple fact of their nakedness.

Cretara communicates the ugliness and mania of the Simpson trial, as well as the personal corruptions, the soullessness and rancor of the legal process. These paintings are rich in shadow and suggestion, imbued with a stifling silence that declares itself again and again in each of these powerful, haunted images.

Domenic Cretara is a professor of art at California State University, Long Beach. Cretara has exhibited widely including a retrospective at the Las Vegas Art Museum in 1998 and a solo exhibition at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle in 2001. His works are in the collections of major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Boston.
