FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 20, 2002 "Palm Trees" Lawrence Yun November 16, 2002 - December 10, 2002 Opening Reception: Saturday, November 16, 5 - 7 PM Schomburg Gallery is pleased to present Lawrence Yun, Annette Edgar and Nasreen Haroon in an exhibition entitled "Palm Trees." Lawrence Yun, Annette Edgar and Nasreen Haroon celebrate the image of the palm tree through color, space, movement and line, breaking free from the predictable associations with the California landscape, to punctuate its meaning with a deeper, more complicated iconic significance. Lawrence Yun's elegant, elegiac images of palm fronds delicately tied with slender red string bring to mind both the understated extravagance of ritual as well as the quietly engaging suggestion of desire. Annette Edgar's lush paintings of seascape scenes with shadowy palm trees, alive with the hint of wind and the clamor and lilt of the water, celebrate a deep, tropical sensibility. Nasreen Haroon paints a deeply personal aesthetic, her palm trees infused with the color and shades of her native landscape amid the history and architecture of her country, while her California palms capture the dusky solitude of early morning beach life. Lawrence Yun received his MFA in drawing and painting from the California State University, Long Beach. He has exhibited his work at the Patricia Correia Gallery at Bergamot Station, the Pierce College Art Gallery and The Angel's Gate Cultural Center. He has work in the Brand Library collection. Annette Edgar has shown at the Arches Gallery in Edinburgh, and the Wasps Gallery in Glasgow. Her work is included in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Nasreen Haroon, a native of Pakistan, has shown at the Pacific Asia Museum, the Carol Behrman Gallery and the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan.
