"Triplethink"

Vincent Calenzo, Nelson Marlowe, Edward Vandenberg

January 12, 2002 - February 9, 2002

Opening Reception: January 12, 4 - 7 PM

Schomburg Gallery is pleased to announce "Triplethink" an exhibition of works by Vincent Calenzo, Nelson Marlowe and Edward Vandenberg.

"Triplethink" a group exhibition of three artists, focuses on the concept of illumination, both spiritual and imaginary as related to the physical world. These three artists "triplethink" ideas of transcendence and faith, simultaneously contracting and expanding familiar approaches to spiritual concerns.

Vincent Calenzo's paintings are infused with sardonic, licentious humor, and re-imagine familiar religious motifs with a comedic subtext. The paintings are electrifying, his color choices bold, his images exquisitely chimerical and light. Nelson Marlowe's drawings are mystical explorations of space as delineated in the imagination. Simultaneously loose and taut, his drawings seek to render the experience of a shadow, or the small, barely perceptible moment as it passes. Edward Vandenberg's luminous fabric pieces create a tension between opposites, highs and lows, opacity and transparency, thus evoking an extraordinary and uncanny peacefulness.

Vincent Calenzo holds an MFA degree from Cornell University and has exhibited at Georges Gallery, Rodman Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He received the grand prize from the San Diego Art Institute as selected by Howard Fox. Nelson Marlowe received an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. He has exhibited at Pleiades Gallery in New York and The New Bedford Art Museum. Edward Vandenberg holds an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been included in several group shows including "Hollywood Hopefuls, Give Me Fame or Give me Death" at the Show Pony Gallery.
