Susan Schomburg opened the Schomburg Gallery at Bergamot Station Arts Center in 2001 after almost a decade of working on Melrose Avenue, as a research director for William A. Karges Fine Art, the veteran L.A. dealer of California Impressionism and later as the Director of Edenhurst Gallery, where she specialized in early California Impressionist paintings.

Ms. Schomburg comes from an art family. Her grandfather was the legendary illustrator Alex Schomburg whose work graced the covers of Marvel Comics Captain America as well as books by Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Alex was the first artist hired by Stanley Kubrick to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In her first year of business, Schomburg came out of the starting blocks quickly. Schomburg's April 2002 show of Domenic Cretara's paintings of the OJ Simpson murder trial attracted television news coverage for the opening -- a rare occurrence for an art opening.

Schomburg Gallery was also featured on national Russian television for an exhibition of historic and contemporary Russian oil paintings. With the Francis & Francis exhibition in June 2002, Schomburg Gallery presented the worldwide debut for Augustus Francis, son of renowned Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis.

Ms. Schomburg is a graduate of Whitman College. She also attended King's College in England. For German and French studies, she studied at the Goethe Institut in Germany and Eurocentre in Paris. Ms. Schomburg is a member of the Public Arts Committee of the Santa Monica Arts Commission. She recently served as a finals adjudicator in the Visual Arts Division for the California Art Alliance's $10,000 Emerging Artist scholarship award.

Ms. Schomburg is also a consultant to the Ryman-Carroll Foundation, which supports young artists in school. She hosts workshops for Ryman to provide information to young artists on ways of breaking into the Los Angeles art scene. Last summer she provided her gallery space as a venue for the 10 year anniversary Ryman alumni exhibition.

After 9/11, Schomburg mounted a show "America the Beautiful" and donated sales proceeds to the Silver Shield Foundation which provides scholarship funds to children of fallen NYC firefighters and policemen.

Separate from her gallery, Ms. Schomburg maintains an art consulting practice, where she offers services including buying at auction, resale of artwork, and private dealing. Additionally, Ms. Schomburg arranges for framing, photography, shipping, insurance and installation of artworks.
